From back yard farming to hot houses, we grew the normal veggies, fruits and flowers that you find at your local farmer markets and road side stops in the spring and summer. Our first sales were baskets of tomatoes, buckets of squash, strawberries, cucumbers, different peppers, and even figs if the trees produced that year. We learned so much about soils and plant conditions and types of plants that worked better for our regional area. Our first years were your generic plants from your large box stores. As we grew, we focused more on different tomatoes and peppers from heirloom seeds. Less yield but such a better flavor.
Over time, we began to specialize to match the trends and request but still mainly spring and summer harvesting. We kept within scale to what our small footprint of land could produce and what we could harvest as small scale farmers. We began sharing and teaching others how they too could become small scale farmers with as little as half an acre of land. We felt that was just good stewardship. We expanded on that principal by recommending and eventually selling books on the subject matter.
Because farming produces seasonal selling periods and we enjoyed sharing with others, we opened an eBay store where we would buy and sell scale farming related items and it sort of grew from there. We sold used equipment, replacement parts, and how to books at first. Since we loved exploring old farms and going to barn sells, we incorporated auctions, and estate sales into our sourcing areas so we can bring a broad range of items to our store. You never know what we will have up for sale as it changes often. And yes, we still sell our produce at the local markets during the summer.
